People and Culture: The Foundation of Transformation

A central theme throughout the Summit was clear: people and culture drive transformation, even in a rapidly evolving, AI-powered environment. Todd Nelmark, CEO of Verdant Specialty Solutions, framed this message succinctly—purpose is why we exist, strategy is where we play and how we win, and culture is how we behave when no one’s watching. His remarks underscored that transformation is about aligning people with business goals and creating a purposeful company culture.

Supporting this, Milan Taylor from Mercer shared revealing survey data. While 71% of chemical employees report high satisfaction and engagement, more than 60% worry about their physical or mental health. With half actively seeking new roles, the underlying causes could include industry transformation and an aging workforce. The data pointed to a critical area: one-third of employees have never discussed AI’s impact on their jobs with leaders. Clear communication about technology’s role—and a commitment to upskilling—will be fundamental.

Panels at the Summit emphasized the need to be intentional with culture, especially in times of M&A and organizational change. Culture isn’t static; leaders must define and communicate their unique identity. As Victoria put it, culture is every leader’s responsibility.

Business Agility, Alignment, and Collaboration

The pressures facing the chemical industry require more than stability—they demand agility and collaboration. Supply chain resilience, sustainability, and customer value were grouped together during the Summit as prime examples of disciplines that benefit from cross-functional alignment and strategic discipline.

Abdul Salam Hagar from Clariant noted that supply chain strategy begins at the planning stage, not just at execution. Modern technology is essential for visibility and integrated operations, moving companies farther from siloed decision-making. With geopolitical shifts and fluctuating tariffs, flexibility is paramount.

Sustainability projects—despite facing delays—remain a focus, showing how efficiency and sustainability gains can support both profitability and environmental goals. Sean Stephan from Oxy described how Six Sigma principles drive measurable improvements, resulting in products with lower carbon footprints and cost advantages.

Collaboration surfaced as a requirement for creating customer value. Pricing psychology and customer value panels made it clear that solution development and value creation don’t stop at sales—they extend across R&D, supply chain, and operations. As Mike Fanset explained, no organization has all the best ideas. Harnessing external partnerships creates far greater opportunities for growth and innovation.

Technology: The Engine of Change

AI and digitalization dominated nearly every conversation at the Summit. The industry understands that technology isn’t the outcome but the engine that powers progress. Holland Kaplan from Knowde compared AI to an internal combustion engine, emphasizing that its true role is to accelerate organizational capabilities—not to replace people.

However, as Shabnam Nejand from Evonik pointed out, widespread adoption is complex in a highly regulated market. Successful implementation relies on data trustworthiness and governance but, most importantly, on empowered and educated teams. If people don’t believe in new technology or drive its adoption, digital investments will fail.

Victoria and Milan Taylor echoed that the heart of digital transformation is trust—trust in leaders to reskill the workforce and redesign jobs, and trust in technology as an enabler, not a threat. Experimentation, risk-taking, and continuous learning are required as the pace of digitization quickens.

Conclusion

The Chemical Summit 2025 spotlighted the inseparable links between people, agility, and technology in fostering transformation. Leaders in the chemical industry must prioritize intentional culture-building, strategic alignment, and ongoing investment in people and innovation. The future will belong to organizations that nurture trust and collaboration while leveraging technology thoughtfully. As Victoria reminded listeners, these three pillars together will guide businesses through uncertainty and set the foundation for lasting success. If you missed this year’s summit, take these insights and start conversations within your own teams—the transformation journey is ongoing.
