How TFS Is Transforming Sustainable Procurement Across Chemical Companies

Sustainability may be a buzzword, but in the chemical industry, it’s quickly becoming a business imperative. On this episode of The Chemical Show, host Victoria Meyer sits down with Jennifer Jewson (Chief Procurement Officer, LyondellBasell, and President of Together for Sustainability) and Danielle Warnock (Senior Manager of Global Carbon Business Strategy at Nouryon, and TFS Regional Lead) to unravel what Together for Sustainability (TFS) is all about—and why sustainable procurement matters more than ever.

What Is TFS?

TFS is an industry alliance of more than 50 petrochemical companies coming together to tackle sustainability challenges across procurement and supply chains. Traditionally, chemical companies avoided engaging with competitors due to concerns about antitrust. As Jennifer explains, sustainability is the one topic where collaboration isn’t just possible—it’s essential.

By joining forces, TFS members collectively influence over $500 billion in annual spend. The group empowers companies to “do together what we cannot do alone.” This means sharing best practices, tools, and standards so the whole industry can progress.

Why Sustainable Procurement Matters

Sustainable procurement isn’t just about reducing greenhouse gas emissions—though that’s a huge part of it. It’s also about long-term thinking: weighing how decisions affect people, the planet, and profitability. As Danielle notes, it’s about building resilient supply chains, reducing risks, and growing ethically.

Procurement has a direct impact on Scope 3 emissions (those indirect emissions from the supply chain). Jennifer shares that for LyondellBasell, Scope 3 emissions account for as much as 78-80% of their footprint—underscoring why procurement is pivotal in reaching sustainability targets.

How TFS Works—and What Members Get

TFS operates as a member-driven initiative. Companies who join aren’t just adding a logo to their website; they’re expected to lean in and contribute. That means sharing expertise, participating in workstreams, and helping shape industry guidelines.

Practical support includes the TFS Academy, training modules to upskill teams, and an “ambassador program” to cascade learnings throughout organizations. TFS also offers shared audit processes, so suppliers only need to go through compliance checks once—instead of for every single customer. There’s a data exchange platform (Sea Green) for managing product carbon footprint data, making standardization much easier.

Ultimately, collaboration here means efficiency—and more effective action.

Navigating the Challenges

The path to sustainability isn’t always linear. Regulatory pressures, market cycles, and regional differences all add layers of complexity. But as both guests agree, the industry is playing a long game. Progress may be slowed by current market downturns or delayed projects, but sustainability is not going away. Over time, sustainable practices will become table stakes—just as clean air and water did decades ago.

Jennifer and Danielle stress that companies interested in joining TFS should come ready to participate actively. The strength of the alliance is in the passion and engagement of its member companies and their people.

Final Takeaways

Whether your organization is just starting the journey or deep in the weeds of sustainable procurement, TFS offers a space to learn, collaborate, and solve problems that no single company can tackle alone.

As Victoria Meyer sums up, the chemical industry’s commitment to sustainability is no longer about hype—it’s about continuous improvement, strategic discipline, and preparing for a future where responsible business is the standard.

For chemical industry professionals, this episode makes clear: sustainability is a collaborative journey, and Together for Sustainability is leading the way.
